The Modern CIO

Over the past decade or so, I’ve had a front-row seat to the evolution of technology and its role in shaping businesses. I started my career as a Java developer, writing code and solving problems one function at a time. Since then, my journey has taken me through various roles across the technology spectrum, eventually leading teams and driving digital transformation at scale.Along the way, I’ve witnessed first-hand how the role of a CIO — and technology leadership in general — has fundamentally changed.
The traditional CIO was often focused on infrastructure, uptime, and security. These remain vital, but today’s expectations have expanded dramatically. A Modern CIO is not just a custodian of systems — they are a strategic partner, deeply embedded in business growth, product innovation, customer experience, and increasingly, in shaping the cultural fabric of the organisation.
We're no longer sitting on the sidelines. We're collaborating with marketing, product, and operations teams. We're expected to have a point of view on AI, platforms, data, customer journeys, privacy, and even ethics. And we need to move faster than ever — while staying grounded in values, resilience, and human leadership.
So what to expect?
I’ve always wanted to give back to the community that shaped me. I’ve been lucky to have mentors who challenged and guided me. And now, I hope to share what I’ve learned — both the wins and the lessons — with aspiring technology leaders, CIOs in the making, and anyone passionate about tech, transformation, and leadership.
The Modern CIO isn’t just about technology. It’s about how we lead through change. How we build trust. How we stay curious. How we bring humanity into digital leadership.
Through this blog, I’ll share:
Reflections on real-world challenges and decisions
Views on emerging tech trends like AI and platform ecosystems
Stories from the trenches — the messy, the meaningful, and the unexpected
Occasional lessons from life that shape how we lead
Whether you're a developer, a new tech manager, a seasoned CIO, or just someone curious about where tech leadership is heading — I hope you'll find something valuable here
